Eyes Forward, Heart Awake

Stephen G Cantrelle

“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.” -Hebrews 12:2 (ESV)

There is a quiet danger that does not arise from ignorance, but from familiarity.

Many experienced pilots have lost their lives not because they lacked skill, but because something subtle slipped—a moment of inattention, a relaxed vigilance, an assumption that yesterday’s awareness would carry them through today’s flight. Aviation is unforgiving. Reality demands presence. Focus is not optional.

Walking with Jesus is no different.

The Christian life cannot be lived on autopilot. It is not sustained by past encounters, correct doctrine, or accumulated experience. It is sustained by present participation. Those who finish well are not necessarily the most impressive; they are the most attentive. They do not take grace for granted. They do not assume proximity. They keep their eyes on Jesus.

“Be sober-minded; be watchful.” -1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)

Scripture calls this posture sobriety.

To be sober is not to be grim or anxious. It is to be awake—clear, attentive, and undistracted. It is to be unintoxicated by self, success, routine, or familiarity. Sobriety is the refusal to drift. It is the settled decision to remain present with Christ—responsive, yielded, and alert.

Participation is faith in motion.

Yieldedness is trust expressed in real time.

Faith is not merely believing about Jesus; it is living with Him. Yieldedness is not passivity; it is cooperation with the life of Christ within. Together, they form a life that is watchful without striving and restful without complacency.

The good ones—the steady ones—do not relax their gaze. They are at peace, but not careless. Resting, but not disengaged. They abide.

This morning, resist the temptation to coast. Refuse distraction. Do not live today on yesterday’s manna. Lift your eyes again—not because you fear falling, but because life flows from attention to Him.

Stay sober.

Stay present.

Keep your eyes on Jesus.

That is not pressure.

That is how life stays alive.
